Briggs and Stratton V-Twin Carburetor Repair

See Down Below for parts I used in this video!

Guide to repairing carburetor on this briggs engine. I don’t rebuild the carb in this video, but you can use the exact same procedure to take it apart and then just replace all the gaskets and o-rings..etc..

Parts used in this video:

I didn’t use this, but if you need a full rebuild kit

  1. Good video. The only thing I would have done different was buy a rebuild kit if I were going to take apart the whole carb like that. Also when you were putting it back together, you should have, (I would have) put the o-ring that sits on top of the emultion tube on the bowl instead of jamming the bowl down on top of it using a bit of vaseline. Oh one more thing, you never checked to see if the jet seals were tight. Those are the most important o-rings in the whole carb. The jet and emulsion tube o-rings. 😉

  2. Thanks. I have a 25hp Briggs that has needed this for 5 years. I ran it on vapor for about 15 minutes awhile back until the gas can got so cold it stopped making vapors.

  3. I HAVE A MOWER GIVEN TO ME THAT HAS BEEN SITTING UP FOR YEARS. LOOKS GREAT ON THE OUTSIDE, BUT WHEN IT FAILED TO CRANK OVER, I SIMPLY STARTED INTO THE CARB AFTER I GOT THE COOLING AIR SHROUD REMOVED, THERE WERE RAT NESTS AND WHITE CHALKY GOD-ONLY-KNOWS WHAT CAKED UP ALL BETWEEN THE COOLING FINS TOO. IT TOOK A DAY JUST TO GET AT RUSTY CRUSTY MOUNTING BOLTS. ANYWAY, I I CHECKED FOR COMPRESSION ON BOTH SIDES (24 HP) AND I NOTICED BOTH PLUGS WERE BURNED AND DISCOLORED UP ABOUT 3/8"..YIKES! FINALLY GOT THE CARB OFF AND COMPLETELY BROKEN DOWN, EVERY FREAKIN ORIFICE I COULD FIND WAS CAKED IN RED WAXY GOO FROM OLD FUEL AND IT STANK AWFULLY. WIFE TOSSED THE TEE AND SHORTS I WAS WEARING. HAD NO KIT, USED CANNED "AIR" AND WD 40 AND TIP CLEANERS TO OPEN OBVIOUS PLUGGED OPENINGS. MADE ONE GASKET THAT WRECKED BREAKING THE HALVES..AS PREDICTED..BTW, THANX FOR THE 4MIL SOCKET TRICK! I USED A 3" SLIP JOINT PLIERS TO BREAK THEM, FINGERS AFTER THAT,THE SOL WAS RUSTED AND GLUED FROZEN, WD 40 AND PATIENCE FINALLY SET IT FREE. AFTER BUILDING A LEAN-TO OVER MY WORK AREA TO KEEP RAIN OFF THINGS, I PUT IT TOGETHER WITH THE ONE GASKET I MADE AND SEALED EVERY FACING WITH LOCTITE 515 GASKET ELIMINATOR. I LOVE THAT STUFF! STRUGGLED REASSEMBLING THE LINKAGES, BUT WATCHED YOUR VID TO PROPERLY ASSEMBLE. NOW, SAME OLD PLUGS, PRIMED IT, FIRED UP, RAN 30 SECS SLOWLY DIED. MANY MANY TIMES, SAME RESULT. NOW, AFTER ALL DAY STRUGGLING , I AM SEARCHING FOR SOME ANSWERS…I DID HAVE A DRY BOWL ON BREAK DOWN, SO, I BRUSHED THE TIP OF THE NEEDLE VALVE AND GOT SOME BETTER RESULTS, BUT STILL, DIES EVEN WITH CHOKE FULL ON. NOW, I AM WONDERING IS THE FUEL PUMP PUSHING ENOUGH GAS TO THE BOWL FLOAT NEEDLE VALVE. FRESH GAS, FREE FLOW THRU FILTER. BUT IS IT ENOUGH VOLUME AND PRESSURE? ALSO, THINKING SEAT SWITCH, I GOOSED THE CARB AS ENGINE WAS LOSING POWER AND IT CAUGHT RIGHT BACK UP.NOW, I DO PLAN ON NEW PLUGSI DROVE AROUND FOR SOME 15 MINUTES STRUGGLING TO KEEP IT GOING TO TREAT A SLOW LEAKING REAR TIRE WITH GREEN GOO. FINALLY GAVE UP, THUNDERSTORM RAN ME OFF THE ROOST, BUT TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY. IT LOOKS AND RUNS TOO GOOD TO KICK IT TO THE CURB. I AM 70, HEART FAILING BUT LOVE TO FIX YARD TOOLS. AND I AM GOING TO CONQUER THIS BITCH TOO, JUST NEED MORE DIAGNOSTICS. I HAVE A ONE OWNER 18.5 HP RIDER I BOUGHT NEW IN 2006 AND I HAVE KEPT IT ALL THESE YEARS RUNNING TIP TOP WITH REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND PROPER LUBE ON TRANNY ETC, ANY SUGGESTIONS ON FUEL? ISSUE, IS IT SOMETHING I MISSED IN CLEANING THE CARB? HELP!! TYVM IN ADVANCE!

  4. Thanks. I have the same mower. I needed to disassemble the carburetor, because of a surging issue. I now know exactly what to do.

  5. Has anyone found a rebuild kit for this Nikki carb? I have a 21 hp 407777 briggs model engine and cannot find a rebuild kit. I have found plenty for 19 hp but cannot find anything for the 21 thus far. Doesnt come with all neccessary gaskets, such as the rectangle paper gasket between intake and carb. Briggs doesnt sale a rebuild kit unfortunately.

  6. TBP great video. I have a problem with the same mower and engine. When I put the throttle to the choke position, it doesn’t engage the choke. If I move the choke linkage manually it engages. Any ideas. Thanks

  7. Help, Drained fuel and replaced with known good fuel. Replaced carburetor, fuel pump, spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter. Engine still turns over but doesn't start. It kicks over and starts with starting fluid but quits when that is burned up. Any ideas?

  8. I’m told these are the worst most troublesome carbs on the market. Usually gaskets. A new one cost me $35.00 on eBay. I’ll replace that instead of rebuilding or anything since they are so cheap and terrible straight off the line. Can’t get any worse than that…so EBAY.
