Briggs and Stratton Intek V-Twin Bent Push-rod and Cylinder Head Replacement

This is my first how-to video that documents the repair effort of my Craftsman lawn tractor with a Briggs and Stratton Intek V-Twin 21 HP engine. The engine began emitting a loud tapping sound from under the rocker cover. Soon thereafter, it began running unevenly as if one cylinder was no longer firing. This video reviews the diagnostic and repair procedure to replace the bent push rods and cylinder heads. It also covers adjusting the valve clearance and has some tips and advice to help avoid this problem on your air-cooled engines. Please feel free to leave comments on how I can improve for future videos. I consider myself handy, so if you would like to see other repair videos, let me know and I can see what I can do. Please like my video if it provided valuable information for you.

Thanks to Foxboss9 and his instructional video: https://youtu.be/HIfAp2DDX-M
I also found this link from TechSupport Forum which explained the problem as well: https://goo.gl/X357XF

I purchased the parts from Amazon to get two-day shipping. If you can wait and prices are comparable, buy from your local small business to help support them. Here are the links to Amazon for the parts specific to my engine:

Briggs Intek Head Gasket Symptoms

Buy Yours HERE — http://amzn.to/1c4UF46

This video I show the symptoms that’s involved with a Briggs single cylinder Intek engine that has a oil consumption problem brought on by a bad head gasket. you may also notice that there could be some oil leaking cost by the same problem of the headgasket pressurizing the oil crankcase causing weaker seals to allow oil to come out. however, the most prevalent symptom is burning oil roughly 4 to 8 ounces in 45 minutes of runtime at full throttle. I hope this helps out and good luck

Valve Adjustment Briggs & Stratton Intek OHV (Craftsman Riding Lawnmower / Lawn Tractor)

Time to tune up the intek engine in my Craftsman lawn tractor, learn how to adjust the valves to factory specification. This procedure is very similar in most OHV engines in many popular brands of riding lawnmowers equipped with a Briggs & Stratton small engine.

I also show you a larger oil filter that may be used on these engines and it is cheaper than what the OEM recommends. The number for the long filter is a NAPA 1348 and the short filter is 7035 check out the pricing from your local auto parts store.

I have a new gasket on order because it is unlikely the old gasket will reseal without leaking. I will also be changing the spark plug to a NGK V type to see if the performance is any better, this lawnmower runs like a top and it is six years old.

I am an independent Amsoil dealer, the synthetic engine oil developed for small engines has been used in this lawnmower since it was new. The engine oil has not been changed since last year and it is a dark amber color, it has not turned black. Amsoil ATM has not contributed to any visible deposits as you will see in the video, the inside of the valve cover is shiny metal and there is no varnish build up like you would see from using regular motor oil. I also run Amsoil in the hydrostatic pump and the final drive in the transmission.

Thanks for watching and all comments are welcome!

Briggs and Stratton Intek OHV Tear Down/Failure Analysis

Taking a quick look at the briggs and stratton Intek single cylinder engines and why they often fail by way of thrown rods. Any questions on these motors please ask in comments and I will reply with word or video.
Thank you for posting questions, this brought up a vital thing that I failed to mentioned. For those not familiar with these engines, they have a common issue with blowing these cylinder head gaskets. With a blown gasket the engine can run okay but it will slowly consume oil from the crankcase, sometimes it will be obvious but not always. Alot of people dont check their oil level until the engine completely burns most of the oil in the crank case, this causes the connecting rod and many other parts to run dry without out. Usually the connecting rod overheats, seizes to the crankshaft and then shatters and destroys the motor.

Thanks!
