This is my first how-to video that documents the repair effort of my Craftsman lawn tractor with a Briggs and Stratton Intek V-Twin 21 HP engine. The engine began emitting a loud tapping sound from under the rocker cover. Soon thereafter, it began running unevenly as if one cylinder was no longer firing. This video reviews the diagnostic and repair procedure to replace the bent push rods and cylinder heads. It also covers adjusting the valve clearance and has some tips and advice to help avoid this problem on your air-cooled engines. Please feel free to leave comments on how I can improve for future videos. I consider myself handy, so if you would like to see other repair videos, let me know and I can see what I can do. Please like my video if it provided valuable information for you.
Thanks to Foxboss9 and his instructional video: https://youtu.be/HIfAp2DDX-M
I also found this link from TechSupport Forum which explained the problem as well: https://goo.gl/X357XF
I purchased the parts from Amazon to get two-day shipping. If you can wait and prices are comparable, buy from your local small business to help support them. Here are the links to Amazon for the parts specific to my engine:

Troubleshooting and finally fixing a Yanmar 2gm20 marine diesel engine. Removal of Cylinder head, valve lapping, re-assembly and some oil pipe improvisation. I looked for videos of people disassembling the gm’s before I attempted this but could not find any. Perhaps this will better inform you what to expect if you are thinking about doing the same. Things learnt – Check mixer elbow every season. Check the oil pipe that runs hidden, behind the engine and before it spews all your oil into the bilge on passage one day!
I’d add, I’m an DIY guy, not a professional mechanic. I didn’t find this too hard and managed to expand my tool-kit, probably for less than it’d have costed to get the local mechanic to step on-board. If you have the confidence to do the same, I’m sure you’d find it as rewarding as I did, though obviously at your own risk! 🙂
Cleaning horrible carbon buildup from the pistons and ring grooves. I had tried many things including scraping, soaking, etc. I tried various products including seafoam and Marvel Mystery Oil MMO Soak with no success. I finally tried this Berryman’s Chemtool which worked great.
Rebuilding my Saturn 1.9 DOHC engine with new rings, bearings, seals, etc. due to a low compression in cylinder 3 situation. The engine was old and it was time for an overhaul.
How to replace a valve in a small engine. I utilized a 17XXXXXXX series Briggs for this vid but it is a similar procedure in any engine minus the valve grinding. Simple task…. Don’t junk that machine repair it!
